Steven Matz didn’t need an internet search to provide a description of his new manager’s background.Read more here.
Growing up on Long Island, the Mets pitcher rooted for Carlos Beltran the player. Matz eventually was drafted into the organization while Beltran still played for the Mets. Their first interaction came in 2009 or ’10, when Beltran recommended to Matz places he could work out in Port St. Lucie, Fla.
The two reconnected by phone in recent days, after Beltran was named the Mets’ new manager.
“His main message was what gave him an edge while he played,” Matz said Thursday night in Midtown, where he held a bowling event for his charity Tru32, which raises money to fund scholarships for children of first responders injured or killed in the line of duty.
