MLBPA setting up fund for Stadium Workers

From The Athletic.

Major League Baseball players are launching a $1 million fund to "help support workers affected by the lockout and cancellation of games by the Major League Baseball owners," they announced Friday. The Players Association and AFL-CIO, a federation of unions, will administer the fund.

The money will be distributed to stadium workers and others — including concession crews, electricians and janitors, for example — who are facing financial hardship due to the lockout. The players will work with AFL-CIO to "determine the hardest hit communities and align resource distribution to those who need it most."

On Tuesday, after the sides did not agree on a new collective bargaining agreement before MLB's deadline, commissioner Rob Manfred announced the cancellation of the first two series of the 2022 regular season.

"There are a lot of people who make our game great. Many aren't seen or heard, but they are vital to the entertainment experience of our games," Andrew Miller and Max Scherzer, MLBPA Executive Board leaders, said in a release. "Unfortunately, they will also be among those affected by the owner-imposed lockout and the cancellation of games. Through this fund, we want to let them know that they have our support."

Good for the MLBPA for helping out the "little people". I know the owners helped out during the pandemic with paying the stadium staff and as a matter of fact since it is them doing the lockout. I am glad that someone is looking out for them right now.
